理查德·福特(Richard Ford)於1944年出生在密西西比州的傑克遜市(Jackson,Mississippi)﹐自幼常居傑克遜和阿肯色州的小石城(Little Rock,Arkansas)﹐在公立學校上學﹐後赴密歇根州立大學(Michigan State University)﹑加利福尼亞大學(The University of California)和華盛頓大學法學院(Washington University Law School)就讀。 創作了《體育記者》(The Sportswriter)﹑《野性生活》(Wildlife)和《獨立紀念日》(Independence Day)等5部長篇小說﹐另出版《石泉》(Rock Spring)和《多重罪惡》(A Multitude of Sins)等3本短篇小說集。

『肆』 理查德·賴特的作品

賴特著有長篇小說 5部，中短篇小說集兩部，與人合寫的劇本兩部以及其他著作近10部，也發表過一些詩。他的突出的成就是小說創作。最早出版的《湯姆大叔的孩子們》(1938)包括五部中篇小說，描寫美國南部黑人遭受歧視和壓迫的悲慘生活。小說中的主要人物雖有反抗精神，但仍不能改變被壓迫的地位。
長篇小說《土生子》塑造了另一類黑人形象。它主要描寫貧窮的黑人青年別格無意中殺死一個白人姑娘，企圖焚屍滅跡，最後被捕，判處死刑。別格是個刻畫得很成功的藝術典型，是與湯姆大叔截然相反的新的黑人形象，被白人看作「壞黑鬼」。他有復仇的怒火，敢於向現存的社會秩序挑戰，甚至盲目行動。作者對別格懷著滿腔同情，書中作了深入的剖析，指出別格的犯罪活動與社會制度有內在的聯系，證明黑人的野蠻凶暴既非天性，也非民族性，而是美國社會制度所造成。《土生子》被某些評論家看成是「有永久價值的社會小說和社會批評」，是「黑人文學中的里程碑」。這部作品對後來的黑人文學創作產生了很大的影響。有些黑人作家追隨賴特，被稱為「賴特派」。
長篇小說《今日的主》(1961)和短篇小說集《八個男人》(1961)在作者死後才出版。這些小說是作者脫離美共後僑居巴黎時所寫，企圖「探索新的主題和哲學」。如長篇小說《局外人》(1953)寫一個厭世的黑人假裝死去，改姓換名，想重新做人，卻處處碰壁，引起無窮煩惱和孤獨感，結果仍然是「局外人」。賴特後期的創作無論在思想上或藝術上，都不及《土生子》。
賴特也寫過一些報道和論文，其中比較著名的有《黑人的力量》(1954)，寫他 1953年去非洲黃金海岸時的觀感；《白人們，聽著》(1957)，是關於國際種族問題的演講。 賴特創作的特點是故事生動、緊湊，文筆簡練，字里行間洋溢著激情，富於感染力 。
