In the autumn of my last year at college,I got into the habit of studying at the Radcliffe library .I didn't do it just to admire the girls, though I agree I liked that too.The place was quiet, nobody knew me,and there was less demand for the books I needed for my studies. The day before one of my midterm history exams,I still hadn't found time to read the first book on the reading list.(That,of course,is a very common disease at Harvard.) I walked over to the reservations desk to get one of the books which would save me from failing me exam the next day. There were two girls working there. One was a tall, sporty type. The other was the quiet kind,in glasses.I choseher-Middle Four Eyes.

‘Do you have English Society in the Middle Ages?’

She looked at me.It was a sharp, unfriendly look.‘Don't you have your own library at Harvard?’she asked.

‘Listen,Harvard students are allowed to use the Radcliffe library.’

‘I'm not talking about what you're allowed to do,Preppie.I'm talking about what's right and fair. You fellows have five million books. We only have a few thousand.’

My god,I thought.I wish I'd spoken to the sporty one! This girl's the type that thinks that, because there are five times as many men at Harvard as there are girls at Radcliffe, the girls gave to be five times as smart.Ican usually make those types feel pretty. But just then I badly needed that damn book.

‘Listen,I need that damn book.’

‘Would you please watch your language,Preppie.’

‘What makes you so sure I went to prep school?’

‘You look stupid and rich,’she said, removing her glasses.

‘You're wrong,’I said.‘I'm smart and poor.’

‘Oh,no,Preppie,’she said.‘I'm smart and poor.’

She was looking straight at me.Her eyes were brown. All right, maybe I look rich, but I wouldn't let a Radcliffe girl-even one with pretty eyes-call me stupid.

‘What makes you so smart?’I asked.

‘I wouldn't go for coffee with you,’she replied.

‘Listen-I wouldn't ask you.’

‘That,’she replied,‘is what makes you stupid.’

Let me explain why I took her for coffee.By al-lowing her to think I wanted to,I got that book. And, because she couldn't leave the library until closing time,I had plenty of time to study it.I learned some useful facts about the church and the law in the eleventh century. As a result,I got an A in my history exam. That, bythe way,was the mark I gave to Jenny's legswhen she first walked out from behind that desk.I can't say I gave her high marks for her clothes, however. They were rather strange,to say the least.I specially hated that In-dian thing that she used for a handbag.Fortunately I didn't mention this,as I later discovered that she had made that herself.

We went to a coffee shop near by.I ordered coffee for both of us,and a chocolate ice-cream for her.

‘I'm Jennifer Cavilleri,’she said.‘I'm American,but my family came from Italy.’I had guessed that al-ready.‘And I'm studying music,’she added.

One day, a poor boy who was trying to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door found that he only had one dime left.He was hungry so he decided to beg for a meal at the next house.
However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk.He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?"
"You don't owe me anything," she replied."Mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness."He said, "Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart."As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the human race.
He was about to give up and quit before this point. The supreme happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved .
Years later the young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where specialists can be called in to study her rare disease.Dr. Howard Kelly, now famous was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes.Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.
Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once.He went back to the consultation room and determined to do his best to save her life. From that day on, he gave special attention to her case.
After a long struggle, the battle was won.Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side. The bill was sent to her room. She was afraid to open it because she was positive that it would take the rest of her life to pay it off. Finally she looked, and the note on the side of the bill caught her attention. She read these words..."Paid in full with a glass of milk."
Dr. Howard Kelly Tears of joy flooded her eyes as she prayed silently: "Thank You, God. Your love has spread through human hearts and hands."

The Pleasure of Reading Detective Novel
I like reading, especially for detective novel. I love recreating the scene from the novel in my mind, and I’ really fancy the bright detective who are created by the writer. However, some people argue that reading detective novel is nothing but a waste of time, since you have the time to read, why don’t you read some book that could learn useful knowledge. But I cannot agree with it.
In the first place, reading detective novel is a good way to learn lots new knowledge from one book. For instance, almost all of the detective novel included the knowledge of investigation, psychology, behavior analysis, and some even involved the aspect of physical and chemistry. The writer perfectly used that knowledge to write into the fiction, which make the reader learn it naturally. Hence, reading detective novel is not a bad thing, it will help you review your academic knowledge and learn something you don’t know before.
In the second place, reading detective novel is like some kind of brainstorming game. When you are reading novel which is every exciting, your mind will follow the plot that will set your wits to work. On another word, reading a detective novel is not only could make you feel relaxed but also could make you become smarter than before.
To sum up, there is great benefit to read detective novel. You could totally enjoy the pleasure that the intelligent detective bring to you,and you could be smarter.

At the most remote end of the crypt there appeared another less spacious. Its walls had been lined with human remains, piled to the vault overhead, in the fashion of the great catacombs of Paris. Three sides of this interior crypt were still ornamented in this manner. From the fourth the bones had been thrown down, and lay promiscuously upon the earth, forming at one point a mound of some size. Within the wall thus exposed by the displacing of the bones, we perceived a still interior recess, in depth about four feet, in width three, in height six or seven. It seemed to have been constructed for no especial use within itself, but formed merely the interval between two of the colossal supports of the roof of the catacombs, and was backed by one of their circumscribing walls of solid granite.

It was in vain that Fortunato, uplifting his ll torch, endeavoured to pry into the depth of the recess. Its termination the feeble light did not enable us to see.

"Proceed," I said; "herein is the Amontillado. As for Luchesi——"

"He is an ignoramus," interrupted my friend, as he stepped unsteadily forward, while I followed immediately at his heels. In an instant he had reached the extremity of the niche, and finding his progress arrested by the rock, stood stupidly bewildered. A moment more and I had fettered him to the granite. In its surface were two iron staples, distant from each other about two feet, horizontally. From one of these depended a short chain, from the other a padlock. Throwing the links about his waist, it was but the work of a few seconds to secure it. He was too much astounded to resist. Withdrawing the key, I stepped back from the recess.

"Pass your hand," I said, "over the wall; you cannot help feeling the nitre. Indeed it is very damp. Once more let me implore you to return. No? Then I must positively leave you. But I must first render you all the little attentions in my power."

"The Amontillado!" ejaculated my friend, not yet recovered from his astonishment.

"True," I replied, "the Amontillado."

As I said these words I busied myself among the pile of bones of which I have before spoken. Throwing them aside, I soon uncovered a quantity of building stone and mortar. With these materials, and with the aid of my trowel, I began vigorously to wall up the entrance of the niche.

I had scarcely laid the first tier of the masonry when I discovered that the intoxication of Fortunato had in a great measure worn off. The earliest indication I had of this was a low moaning cry from the depth of the recess. It was not the cry of a drunken man. There was then a long and obstinate silence. I laid the second tier, and the third, and the fourth; and then I heard the furious vibrations of the chain. The noise lasted for several minutes, ring which, that I might hearken to it with the more satisfaction, I ceased my labours and sat down upon the bones. When at last the clanking subsided, I resumed the trowel, and finished without interruption the fifth, the sixth, and the seventh tier. The wall was now nearly upon a level with my breast. I again paused, and holding the flambeaux over the mason-work, threw a few feeble rays upon the figure within.

A succession of loud and shrill screams, bursting suddenly from the throat of the chained form, seemed to thrust me violently back. For a brief moment I hesitated—I trembled. Unsheathing my rapier, I began to grope with it about the recess; but the thought of an instant reassured me. I placed my hand upon the solid fabric of the catacombs, and felt satisfied. I reapproached the wall. I replied to the yells of him who clamoured. I re-echoed—I aided—I surpassed them in volume and in strength. I did this, and the clamourer grew still.

One day when Jack was walking in the park, he saw a woman he knew sitting on a chair with a dog beside her. The dog was looking up at the woman. Jack went up to the woman and said, "Hello, Sue, how are you? May I sit and talk with you for a while?"
"Of course, please sit down." Sue said. Jack sat down next to Sue on the chair, and they talked quietly together. The dog still looked up at Sue, as if waiting for something to eat.
"That's a nice dog," Jack said, looking at the animal.
"Yes, he's nice and he's strong and healthy."
"And hungry," Jack said. "He hasn't taken his eyes off you. He thinks you've got some food for him."
"That's true," Sue said, "but I haven't."
The two friends laughed and then Jack said, "Does your dog bite (bite-bit-bitten v. 咬)?"
"No," Sue said. "He's never bitten anyone."
Hearing this, Jack decided to touch the dog. He put out his hand and touched the animal's head. At once it jumped up and bit him.
"Hey!" Jack shouted. "You said he didn't bite."
"No, he doesn't," Sue answered. "You asked me if my dog bit, and I said no. That's not my dog. My dog is at home."
