理查德·福特(Richard Ford)于1944年出生在密西西比州的杰克逊市(Jackson,Mississippi)﹐自幼常居杰克逊和阿肯色州的小石城(Little Rock,Arkansas)﹐在公立学校上学﹐后赴密歇根州立大学(Michigan State University)﹑加利福尼亚大学(The University of California)和华盛顿大学法学院(Washington University Law School)就读。 创作了《体育记者》(The Sportswriter)﹑《野性生活》(Wildlife)和《独立纪念日》(Independence Day)等5部长篇小说﹐另出版《石泉》(Rock Spring)和《多重罪恶》(A Multitude of Sins)等3本短篇小说集。

『肆』 理查德·赖特的作品

赖特著有长篇小说 5部，中短篇小说集两部，与人合写的剧本两部以及其他著作近10部，也发表过一些诗。他的突出的成就是小说创作。最早出版的《汤姆大叔的孩子们》(1938)包括五部中篇小说，描写美国南部黑人遭受歧视和压迫的悲惨生活。小说中的主要人物虽有反抗精神，但仍不能改变被压迫的地位。
长篇小说《土生子》塑造了另一类黑人形象。它主要描写贫穷的黑人青年别格无意中杀死一个白人姑娘，企图焚尸灭迹，最后被捕，判处死刑。别格是个刻画得很成功的艺术典型，是与汤姆大叔截然相反的新的黑人形象，被白人看作“坏黑鬼”。他有复仇的怒火，敢于向现存的社会秩序挑战，甚至盲目行动。作者对别格怀着满腔同情，书中作了深入的剖析，指出别格的犯罪活动与社会制度有内在的联系，证明黑人的野蛮凶暴既非天性，也非民族性，而是美国社会制度所造成。《土生子》被某些评论家看成是“有永久价值的社会小说和社会批评”，是“黑人文学中的里程碑”。这部作品对后来的黑人文学创作产生了很大的影响。有些黑人作家追随赖特，被称为“赖特派”。
长篇小说《今日的主》(1961)和短篇小说集《八个男人》(1961)在作者死后才出版。这些小说是作者脱离美共后侨居巴黎时所写，企图“探索新的主题和哲学”。如长篇小说《局外人》(1953)写一个厌世的黑人假装死去，改姓换名，想重新做人，却处处碰壁，引起无穷烦恼和孤独感，结果仍然是“局外人”。赖特后期的创作无论在思想上或艺术上，都不及《土生子》。
赖特也写过一些报道和论文，其中比较著名的有《黑人的力量》(1954)，写他 1953年去非洲黄金海岸时的观感；《白人们，听着》(1957)，是关于国际种族问题的演讲。 赖特创作的特点是故事生动、紧凑，文笔简练，字里行间洋溢着激情，富于感染力 。
